Are you a new advisor to the specialty area of Pre-Law Advising? If so, first let us welcome you! Next, here are a few things that you should do to get started. First and foremost you need to make sure that you school is registered with LSAC:
If your school is creating a pre-law advising office or position for the first time and there has never been anyone previously doing that job, you will need to contact Tracy Beck. She can be reached at tbeck@LSAC.org or (215) 968-1170. She will get you set up with the necessary paperwork to make sure that your school is included in their system and you get on the LSAC mailing list.
If you are one individual replacing one individual who was previously the pre-law advisor, you will also need to contact Tracy Beck. She will work with you to ensure that appropriate information is updated.
If you are a new advisor and you will be one of multiple pre-law or pre-professional advisors you will probably need to talk to the head of your Advising Center. That person will probably be listed as the sole or coordinating pre-law advisor at your college or university and will be the main person that certain mailings will go to. You do want to make sure however, that you are added as an additional pre-law advisor at the university, and that can only be done by the listed sole or coordinating advisor contacting LSAC themselves and getting you added.
After making sure that you are listed or registered with LSAC, the next thing to do is make sure that you join MAPLA! As a member of MAPLA you will be privileged to a wealth of information about relevant resources and services, as well as able being able to get professional support and development from other pre-law advisors across the Midwest.
Finally, try to attend the next MAPLA conference, as this will be a great opportunity to find out what is working well for other pre-law advisors and get answers to questions about things that you might have as someone new to the field. Best of luck! |
